Davistown Museum Art Collection:

The indoor art exhibit at The Davistown Museum has two major components: artwork owned by or bequested to the Museum and, artwork loaned to the Museum by contemporary artists for the Davistown Museum Annual Art Exhibition. The main exhibit hall of the Davistown Museum houses an eclectic mix of antiquarian and contemporary art in an installation, including tool exhibits. Contemporary artworks loaned to the museum for the annual exhibition are juxtaposed with works in the permanent collection.  (Click here to view the Museum Floor Plan.)

One of the purposes of The Davistown Museum Art Exhibition is to explore the relationship between antiquarian art and contemporary art and historical artifacts that are sculpture objects in themselves.  The Museum tool displays explore found tools and other artifacts, not only as historical components of Maine and Davistown history, but as accidental durable remnants, with aesthetic and sculptural qualities that transcend and enhance historical significance, as well.  The mission of the museum art exhibition then is, the display of historically significant tools in juxtaposition with the works of contemporary Maine artists, who are the creative descendants of the toolmakers of the ancient dominions of Maine.

Visitors to this website may take a photo tour of The Davistown Museum permanent collections, annual art exhibition loans and Hulls Cove Sculpture Garden exhibits by clicking on the links to the left.  The status of each artwork is indicated within the listing by a code. The Davistown Annual Art Exhibition re-opens every year in March, at Liberty, Maine. Many new features will be added during the coming months. Please keep track of our web site for schedules, events and announcements.
