About Us

The Jonesport Wood Company operates three stores in Liberty, Hulls Cove and Searsport, Maine. We sell old tools, hardware, old books, antiquarian books, magazines, antiques, collectibles and miscellaneous items of every description. We have hundreds of thousands of items for sale including thousands of old tools. Woodworking tools, including hand planes, precision machinist tools and usable artifacts of all kinds are our special interest. For almost 35 years, we have purchased tool collections and estate lots and cleaned out cellars and attics in the New England area. We then ship these items to our stores in Maine. We have purchased tools and books at the approximate rate of 60 lots per month on a year-round basis since 1971.

If you have, or know of someone who has a collection of antiquarian tools, a shop lot of used tools or an estate lot of antiques and/or old books for sale anywhere in New England, please call our Boston answering service at (888) 405-2007 or (617) 558-3839, the Hulls Cove Tool Barn at (207) 288-5126 or check the contact information section of this Website for mailing addresses.

Please note our shop schedules. All stores are open year-round, with the exception of the Liberty Tool Co., which closes for re-stocking every January & February, and usually reopens the first Saturday in March at 8:00 AM for our annual "Rites of Spring" tool sale -- bring a hard hat.

The Great Wass Island Salvage Company is the name of our Internet Sales Department.  Please contact our sales coordinator for assistance with Internet and eBay listings.

DIRECTIONS:

The Hulls Cove Tool Barn can be difficult to find for first time visitors to Mount Desert Island. For visitors coming long distances, take Rt. 3 from Augusta (I-95) all the way to Hulls Cove or take Rt. 1A from Bangor (I-395) to Ellsworth and pick up Rt. 3. When driving onto Mt. Desert Island, be sure to bear left on Rt. 3 at the light just beyond the Thompson Island Information Center (otherwise you could get thoroughly lost in the wilds of Mount Desert Island). Hulls Cove is just prior to the main entrance to Acadia National Park on Route 3, three miles north of (before) Bar Harbor as well as 16 miles south of (beyond) Ellsworth.

As you enter Hulls Cove you will see on your left the ocean and the Chart Room Restaurant. On your right will be the Hulls Cove General Store, Exxon Station and Post Office. Turn right at the Exxon station. After the pumps, the Breakneck Road goes diagonally up a small rise. Look for the large wooden sign for the Tool Barn and Davistown Museum. You will notice the Sculpture Gardens on your left and the red farmhouse on your right at the top of the rise. The Tool Barn is located just past the house.

If you pass the turn, just prior to the Acadia National Park Entrance you'll see a small sign directing you back .

DESCRIPTION:

The Hulls Cove Tool Barn is located on the second floor of the barn on the Hulls Cove property. The lower sections of the barn include shipping and receiving for all stores, a pricing room, an oiling room, tool cleaning room and three parts departments. Adjoining the barn is our repair shop, and a large greenhouse where we grow our tomatoes and flowers. The Tool Barn itself, the smallest of our three stores, also contains the most extensive selection of old woodworking hand tools of any of our stores. We offer a selection of several hundred hand planes, Stanley tools of all kinds as well as other collectible and/or patent-dated tools. We also maintain an interesting selection of antiquarian items (books, ephemera, crocks, lanterns, primitives, postcards, etc.) at this location. Due to space limitations, all power tools, contemporary items and used furniture are sold at the Liberty store.

Also located at the Hulls Cove property is the office, reference library and sculpture garden of The Davistown Museum.

Coming from Augusta, the turnoff is via Rt. 220 into the center of the village (look for the Lake St. George State Park; the turn is just after the park.) Coming from Belfast, visitors will go up a hill past a rest area, pass an overlook with a nice view to the north then turn left at the bottom of the hill opposite a state of Maine DOT sandlot. DESCRIPTION:

Enter here for our photo tour of the store.

The Liberty Tool Company consists of a four story balloon framed building built circa 1885. Until the Liberty Village General Store was constructed across the street in 1891 (six inches higher), this building was the largest structure between Belfast and Augusta. In the old days, Liberty, Maine, was a main overnight stagecoach stop with a number of hotels, canneries, foundries and other enterprises. The Liberty Tool Co. building was a general store with a rooming house on the second floor and a dance hall on the third floor. All these floors, as well as the cellar, are now utilized for the sale of old tools, hardware, antiques, trunks, used furniture, prints, postcards, books, magazines, records, glassware, pottery, toys, collectibles and any other interesting artifacts we can salvage from estate lots throughout New England.  Our tool annex is located across the street in the former Banks' Garage.

Visitors to Liberty please note that the Liberty Graphics outlet maintains approximately the same shop hours as the Liberty Tool Co. Both businesses are located just up the hill from the famous octagonal post office (on the Register of Historical Buildings in the scenic St. George River Valley.)
